Water Filtration in West Vancouver

West Vancouver does not rely on one single water source. The District treats water locally and also purchases treated water from Metro Vancouver. That is why we do not recommend a filter from the postal code alone.

Blue Monkey Plumbing plans and installs residential whole-home and point-of-use filtration around your actual goal, household demand, pressure, plumbing layout, and the water lines you want treated.

Monday to Friday, 7:00 am to 4:00 pm. Residential water plumbing and electric water heaters only. No gas, heating, HVAC, or commercial work.

Do West Vancouver homes need water filtration?

Not automatically. West Vancouver's municipal drinking water is treated and monitored. Household filtration is usually a choice made for a defined reason, such as chlorine-related taste or odour, sediment, filtered drinking water, or a concern supported by an appropriate water test.

The useful question is not “What is the best filter?” It is “What do you want removed, at which taps, at what flow rate, and how will the system be maintained?”

Why filtration planning is different in West Vancouver

The District's steep terrain and varied housing make system layout and flow just as important as the filter media.

Multiple supply areas

A property may receive locally treated water or Metro Vancouver water. Some locations can receive different supply depending on system conditions.

Pressure and elevation

The public system uses reservoirs, pump stations, and pressure-reducing valves across changing elevations. Pressure at the house still needs to be measured.

Large peak demand

Multiple bathrooms, suites, large tubs, and simultaneous fixtures can create high flow. An undersized filter can become an unwanted restriction.

Outdoor branches

Irrigation, hose taps, pools, and detached buildings may not need filtered water. Separating those branches can preserve capacity and reduce cartridge use.

The District reports a network that includes 23 reservoirs, 10 pump stations, and 35 pressure-reducing valves. Those public-system facts explain why we verify conditions at the property rather than assuming one pressure or supply arrangement across West Vancouver.

First decide what part of the property should be filtered

Treating every litre is not always necessary. The plumbing route should follow the result you want.

PLAN 1

One drinking-water tap

An under-sink system treats water used for drinking and cooking without affecting showers, toilets, laundry, irrigation, or hose taps.

PLAN 2

Indoor cold-water system

Where the piping allows it, outdoor or high-demand branches may be separated so the filter serves the house rather than irrigation or exterior use.

PLAN 3

Whole property

A point-of-entry system can treat all downstream water, but it must be sized for maximum demand and accessible for cartridge changes and servicing.

Filtration options for West Vancouver homes

No single system does everything. Each option should be tied to a stated purpose and, where relevant, a certified reduction claim.

Particulate

Whole-home sediment filtration

Captures suspended particulate before it moves through downstream valves and fixtures. Cartridge grade and housing size affect flow and service frequency.

Taste and odour

Whole-home carbon filtration

Commonly selected for chlorine-related taste and odour. Media volume and flow rating must suit actual household demand.

Combined setup

Sediment plus carbon

A staged arrangement can protect carbon media from particulate while addressing an aesthetic taste or odour goal.

Kitchen

Under-sink carbon filtration

A focused choice for drinking and cooking water when there is no reason to filter bathrooms, laundry, or outdoor uses.

Specific reduction

Point-of-use reverse osmosis

Requires cabinet space, a drain connection, a dedicated faucet, and regular cartridge and membrane maintenance.

Serviceability

Isolation and bypass piping

A properly planned whole-home installation should be serviceable without unnecessarily shutting down the property's entire water system.

Match the symptom to the next step

A filter can be useful, but only when filtration addresses the actual cause.

What you noticeWhat should be checked firstWhen filtration may help
Chlorine-like taste or smellConfirm whether the concern is at one drinking tap or throughout the house.Certified activated carbon can address aesthetic chlorine, taste, and odour concerns.
Sand, grit, or visible particulateFind out whether nearby main work, meter work, flushing, or private plumbing work recently occurred.Sediment filtration may help if particulate continues to enter the private plumbing.
Brown water on hot taps onlyInspect the water heater and hot-water system.Whole-home cold-water filtration may not correct a problem originating in the water heater.
Weak flow throughout the houseMeasure pressure and check the main shut-off, PRV, piping, and any existing cartridges.Filtration is not a pressure repair and can make low flow worse if incorrectly sized.
Concern about lead or another contaminantArrange appropriate water testing rather than relying on colour, odour, or taste.Use a device certified for the exact contaminant and reduction claim shown by the result.
Sudden municipal advisoryFollow District or Vancouver Coastal Health instructions.Do not assume a household filter replaces boil-water or do-not-consume directions.

What we need to see at the property

  • Where the water service enters the home
  • Main pipe size, material, and accessible shut-offs
  • Static and working pressure where required
  • The pressure-reducing valve and water meter arrangement
  • Branches serving irrigation, hose taps, pools, suites, or detached buildings
  • Mechanical-room, crawlspace, or cabinet clearance
  • Space below housings for future cartridge removal
  • Drain and dedicated-faucet requirements for reverse osmosis
  • Expected simultaneous household demand
  • Strata approval or common-property restrictions where applicable

How Blue Monkey plans the installation

We make the plumbing plan before cutting into the main.

Define the result

We establish whether the goal is sediment reduction, taste and odour improvement, filtered drinking water, or a verified reduction claim.

Map the water branches

We identify which indoor and outdoor lines should pass through the system and which should remain unfiltered.

Check pressure and demand

We consider the property's pressure, main size, likely peak flow, and the pressure drop created by the proposed equipment.

Confirm service access

We allow space for shut-offs, bypass piping, cartridge changes, and future maintenance.

Price the approved scope

We explain the installation price and any required piping changes before approved work proceeds.

Install, flush, and test

We complete the approved installation, check for leaks, flush as required, confirm flow, and explain maintenance.

West Vancouver water filtration FAQs

Where does West Vancouver's drinking water come from?

The District says nearly half is sourced and treated within West Vancouver, with the rest purchased from Metro Vancouver. The District operates local treatment facilities at Eagle Lake and Montizambert. Supply to a particular area can depend on the distribution system and operating conditions.

Does West Vancouver municipal water need additional filtration?

Not automatically. Municipal water is treated and monitored. A home system is normally selected for a specific preference or concern, such as chlorine-related taste or odour, sediment, filtered kitchen water, or a contaminant identified through appropriate testing.

Should irrigation and hose taps pass through a whole-home filter?

Usually there is little benefit in using filter capacity for lawns, hose taps, or other outdoor demand. If the plumbing layout allows, those branches can sometimes remain unfiltered. We need to see where they split from the main.

Will a whole-home filter reduce flow in a large house?

It can if the system is undersized, the media is too restrictive, or cartridges are not changed. We consider main size, pressure, simultaneous fixture demand, and the manufacturer's rated flow before recommending a system.

Can filtration fix high or low water pressure?

No. Filtration is not a pressure-control repair. High pressure may require PRV work, while low flow can result from the supply, valves, piping, a PRV, or loaded filters. The cause should be identified first.

What certification should I look for?

The certification should match the intended claim. NSF/ANSI 42 covers aesthetic effects such as chlorine, taste, and odour. NSF/ANSI 53 addresses specified health-effect contaminant reduction claims, while NSF/ANSI 58 applies to reverse-osmosis systems. Check the exact certified claim for the model, not only the standard number.

Do you install customer-supplied systems?

Sometimes, after confirming the product, components, instructions, certification, capacity, and site conditions. Blue Monkey Plumbing does not provide the product warranty for equipment purchased elsewhere. We explain whether the proposed installation qualifies for our workmanship guarantee before proceeding.

How often will the filters need replacement?

There is no single interval. It depends on the system, cartridge capacity, household consumption, incoming water conditions, and pressure drop. Replacement must follow the manufacturer's requirements and actual performance.
